Using Notemine

Help! Who are the moderators?

If you need help with Notemine in general, issues with your thought, have a question, and/or concern, you can talk to the following moderators by posting for help in the forums:

Rules (as of Feb 28 2008)

Anyone who antagonizes or divides the Notemine community should not be on Notemine. Notemine is meant to be a place that brings people together, not tear them apart.

This another Twitter?

Not even close. Twitter asks "What are you doing?", while Notemine asks, "What are you thinking, and how are you feeling?". The idealogies that Twitter and Notemine run on are completely different that Notemine is not considered a competitor to Twitter and vice versa. We encourage you to use both if you do!

Notemine also isn't meant to be a place where you can fire out posts constantly like on Twitter. The imposed posting time limits on Notemine is meant for you to be concise about what you're thinking.

What is this 'post time'?

By default, users can only post every 30 minutes. The idea of Notemine is to be concise about what you want to write in your thought box since the space is limited. It also helps prevent spam on the site.

Why can I only edit my last thought?

Once you have thought something, it's not something you can take back. Hence, you can only edit your last thought, and it's preferred that you edit it only to revise formatting issues. However, we don't have any strict rules about changing your last thought completely.

How do I edit my last thought?

  • In the navigation, go to You > Thoughts > Edit last thought.
  • In the thoughtstream, click on any of your thoughts to find an option to edit your last thought.

I want to be more anonymous.

  • When creating an account, you're free to use random numbers or letters.
  • You have the option to make your thoughts anonymous, by setting the thought's privacy level when you make a post.

What are bookmarks?

Bookmarks allow you to subscribe to a user's stream. By bookmarking a user's stream, you will be updated the next time they make a new post. Adding a bookmark does not notify the owner of the stream, and stream owners do not know they have been bookmarked.

How can I ignore a user?

To ignore a user, go to their thoughtstream and click on the ignore button to add that user to your ignore list. Ignore does the following:
  • Removes the ignored user's thoughts from any stream.
  • The ignored user cannot comment in your thoughts.
  • You will not see any comments made in chats by the ignored user.

How can I post from e-mail or cellphone?

Send an e-mail or text message with no subject and your thought as the message body to p@notemine.com. If successful, a post will immediately be made from your account. If unsuccessful, you might have to add the e-mail address you are sending from to your account profile.

Privacy

What are the privacy levels?

  • Public - Everyone can see your thought.
  • Anonymous - No one knows that you posted your thought. Your thought is only visible from the front page. Comments recieved and made in anonymous thoughts are also anonymous. A separate anonymous stream will be created in the future. Unfortunately, @username notation will not work for commenting.
  • Friends - Only friends on your friends list can see your thought.
  • Filter - Only users specified on the filter can see your thought.
  • Eyes Only - Only you can see your thought.

What are filters?

You can create a filter and assign users to that filter. Setting your thought's privacy level to "Filter" and setting the filter to your created filter will allow only those users on the filter to see your thoughts.

Thoughts

(Old Editor) What's the proper way to format my thoughts?

Again, if you didn't notice, this question applies to the former editing mode.

Notemine reads the tags using a box model. Here's an example of how a thought should be formatted.

Here's the equivilent of that model in the thought posting area.

Here's what it looks like when convering to the box model.

Notice that none of the tags 'cross' each other.

In general, do not do the following:

  • Put color tags outside of an alignment tag, such as

[c:color] <- it's coming before the alignment tag!
    [a:alignment]
    TEXT
    [/a]
    [/c]
  • Improperly nest tags such as:

    [a:alignment]
    [c:color]
    TEXT
    [/a]
    [/c]

Notice that the [/c] tag should have came before the [/a] tag.
What if I want multiple colors, and line spacing?

How do I change the privacy settings on my thoughts?

There are two ways to do it.
1. You > Thoughts > Manage Thoughts > select a thought to modify.
2. In your stream, click on the thought you wish to modify, and select "properties".

What is %text% and why do I need it?

When posting a thought, you are free to remove %text% and write in your thought. %text% comes from your template, where if you wanted to post a thought from your e-mail address or cellphone, Notemine would replace %text% with your thought.
